A Microloan Helps a Whole Family

Zambia Microloan

Elli and her family stand outside their home in Zambia.

Through a small loan, a borrower gives opportunities to her family members – whether it’s through education, improved sanitation and living conditions, or the opportunity to participate in the family business.

Elli, pictured here with her children, is a member of Whole Planet Foundation’s partner MicroLoan Foundation in Zambia. She belongs to the 17-member Lutusrne Loan Group. Lutusrne means “let’s help each other.” At the moment, the group is managing their second cycle and just completed their 4th repayment.  Elli is group secretary. Her first microloan of 700 ZMW (≈$60 USD) enabled her to invest in bulk purchases of food — small dried fish, beans, rice, and cooking oil.

Elli is now managing a loan of 1000 ZMW (≈$84).  This second loan allowed her to add tomatoes and charcoal to her market offerings.  This cycle she estimates that she will earn 250 ZMW in profit alone.   She travels to Lusaka twice a month to restock her market stand. Her oldest son (not pictured above) is enrolled in a technical course at a local college and Elli appreciates that she is able to finance her son’s education.

Justin’s Story

Growing up in a small mountain town in Pennsylvania, Justin Gold’s family owned and operated a small natural foods store where he acquired an early awareness, education and appreciation for natural foods. Starting with frustration for lack of taste and variety in his vegetarian diet, Justin’s entrepreneurial drive led him to create delicious nut butters in his home kitchen.

In 2007, Justin’s was the first of Whole Foods Market’s Local Producer Loan recipients in the grocer’s Rocky Mountain Region. Justin Gold, CEO and founder of explains, “Because of the loan and support of Whole Foods Market, I was able to grow with Whole Foods Market nationally. Becoming the founding member of the Microloan-a-Month program [with Whole Planet Foundation] was a way for us to show our appreciation and also help people and businesses around the world; helping give others the help we were given.”

In the spirit of entrepreneurship and paying it forward, Justin’s funds a microloan a month for Whole Planet Foundation, which in turn will be loaned to entrepreneurs like Elli in the developing world.
