Bobby is a Team Member Volunteer who was inspired to organize a 5K fun run in January to benefit Whole Planet Foundation and the Blessing Basket Project.
Hi, my name is Bobby Covington and I went on the Team Member Volunteer Program through Whole Planet Foundation to northern Ghana, where we were hosted by the Blessing Basket Project.
Witnessing firsthand Whole Planet Foundation and the Blessing Basket Project’s tremendous impact on the community was by far the most powerful experience of my life. Seeing the pride and power in someone’s face when they’ve sustainably elevated themselves from poverty – there are just no words.
We spent much of our volunteer time at the girls’ school in the village of Nyariga. These girls will walk five miles, one way and barefoot, just to receive their education. These girls are so determined to get their education, and dream of so much more, and are willing to work harder than anyone I’ve seen to get there.
I saw how hard these people work to better themselves and I was moved to help, so I am putting on a 5K road race, the Road to Prosperity 5K at Camp Mabry here in Austin, Texas on January 11 to raise money for Blessing Basket Project’s Education Empowerment Fund (which provides scholarships to orphan girls in the village of Nyariga in northern Ghana) and for Whole Planet Foundation. Even though the region is very poor, girls cannot attend school unless they have a uniform, a school bag, school fees and supplies (approx. $130 USD annually). All proceeds will go directly to these two amazing organizations – think of how many lives we can change!
The event is Sunday, January 11 at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas. And if you register for the 5k before 12/18, you’ll also get a t-shirt! Sign up here.
