Edith is the chairlady of the Tiklizwani Group (“Let’s Unite”) in Mazabuka, Zambia. When our team visited Edith, her 14 member group was managing their first loan cycle with MicroLoan Foundation and had just made their 6th repayment along with receiving training on business planning. At this point, members can start to complete business plans for next cycle.
Edith invested her 700 ZMW (≈$60) loan in her egg business. She already had 29 hens and she used the money to buy chicken feed and vaccines for the chickens. She sells the eggs at the market and other customers just come to the house to purchase them. A tray of 30 eggs sells for 24 ZMW (≈$2), otherwise 1 egg is 1 ZMW (≈$.08). After she repays the loan, she estimates that she has 100 ZMW (≈$8) of weekly profit.
